Kemah, Indian for "facing the wind," has enjoyed a storied past. Beginning with pirate Jean Lafitte and his buried treasure on to the unending night life of the illegal gambling days during the early 50s.

Texas restauranteur Jimmie Walker came to this landmark site in 1950 to operate a restaurant catering to the gamblers who would frequent the second-floor casino in the wood-framed building.

The restaurant was destroyed in 1961 by Hurricane Carla and then totally rebuilt in 1963. The new building was designed to provide the finest panoramic view of Galveston Bay, as well as to survive the hurricanes that often invade this region.

Further repairs were made in 1983 after suffering damage from Hurricane Alicia. In 1989, after Hurricane Jerry, Landry's Seafood Restaurants, Inc., under the direction of President and CEO Tilman Fertitta, redesigned this historic landmark — elevating Landry's at Jimmie Walker's to its present day status as the premier dining establishment on the Texas Gulf Coast.

The Jimmie Walker family is pleased that Landry's at Jimmie Walker's continues the long-standing history of serving the finest Gulf seafood in the best traditions.
